Optimum Geriatric Exercise
This course covers why canine exercise is important, how to evaluate a dog before and after exercises, which muscles each exercise affects, and how to choose and perform appropriate exercises. Though the exercises we chose to teach are designed for geriatric dogs, they can be performed and would be beneficial for dogs of all ages. The purpose is for veterinary professionals, whether they have had rehabilitation training or not, to be able to implement these exercises into their medical recommendations for improved quality of life, cognitive function and longevity for their canine patients. With 24 exercises dripped in 2 week intervals, and lessons less than 30 minutes, we offer a deep dive to understanding not only the exercises, but tips on the dog’s behavior (cheating), outthinking the dogs, proper biomechanics of the dog and handler, beginning and end points of each exercise, and when to discontinue an exercise, as well as red flags indicating the dog needs to be evaluated for a problem.
